Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team split a pair of games with the Saint Joseph Hawks on Wednesday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field. UCR (7-16) won the first game 7-1 but fell in the rubber game 5-4 in eight innings.
Getting the starting nod for the Highlanders in game one was senior pitcher Stephanie Marshall. Marshall allowed just one run to score in the second inning as she picked up her third win of the year.
Tied at one apiece after two frames, UCR's bats exploded in the third as they scored four runs on five hits and one error to take a 5-1 lead. Jojo Mendoza's RBI single down the left field line scored Katie Curtis from third to start off the inning for the Highlanders. With the bases loaded, Mendoza was then brought home by a Quinn Redman single. A costly error by the Hawks right fielder then allowed two more UCR runners to score, giving the Highlanders a four run advantage.
UCR plated two additional runs in the sixth giving relief pitcher Casey Suda a six run lead to work with as she closed out the game in the seventh inning. Kameryn Hebenton led the Highlanders with four RBI, two hits, and one run, while Brittany Kenney, Jessica Vasser, and Quinn Redman each added two hits.
UC Riverside put one across in the first inning in game two of the doubleheader, but Saint Joseph responded by touching Amy Lwin for three runs in the second. UCR then plated two runs in the third inning to knot the game at three apiece.
That score would remain intact for the rest of regulation as both clubs could not get another runner across. With the bases loaded in the eighth, the Hawks scored two runs off a Erika Rosenwinkel single. That was all Saint Joseph's needed as UCR was only able to plate one in the bottom of the eighth off a Brooke Hebenton single.
Lwin pitched all eight innings for UCR, but fell to 1-2 on the year. Vasser had two RBI for the Highlanders while Krystal Marquez had two hits.
The Highlanders return to the diamond for the Amy S. Harrison Classic on Friday-Saturday March 13-14. UCR battles with Longwood at 11:30 on Friday, followed by a 2:00 pm game with Providence College.
