Bakersfield, CA - After taking a week off from competition for final exams, the UC Riverside softball team returned to the fields on Wednesday for a doubleheader at Cal State Bakersfield. The Roadrunners took home a 2-1 victory in the first game but UCR (11-18) rebounded by taking the rubber game 3-2.
In game two, the Highlanders got on board early as they scored two runs on two hits and one error in the first inning. Taylor Thomas got things started with a double to right center and was later brought home by Brittany Keeney. One bat later, freshman Jessica Vasser hit her first career home run to give UCR a 2-0 lead.
CSUB responded in the fourth when Brittany Johnson's single up the middle plated two runners, evening out the score at two apiece.
UCR then scored the game winning run in the top of the sixth off a Brooke Hebenton single. Pitcher Amy Lwin held the Roadrunners scoreless for the remaining two innings as the Highlanders held on for the 3-2 victory.
Thomas and Vasser each had two hits to lead the Highlanders, while three players tallied one run and RBI. Lwin pitched all seven innings, allowing just five hits and two runs, both earned.
In the first game, the Highlanders and Runners were notched in a scoreless tie through two innings until both teams plated one runner in the third. Quinn Redman singled to right field to start off the inning for UCR, and then advanced to second base by a Tricia Adgar sacrifice bunt. Kameryn Hebenton then hit an RBI double to left field sending Redman home for the Highlanders lone score of the game.
CSUB countered in their respective half inning as Justeen Maeva's single to left center brought home Stefanie Frei from second, tying the game at one apiece.
The Roadrunners took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning as Jaimey Kleinsmith's RBI single scored the go-ahead run. UC Riverside was held scoreless the remainder of the game as CSUB took the first game of the doubleheader.
Stephanie Marshall pitched a seven-hit six inning game, striking out two but allowing two runs across the plate.
The Highlanders begin Big West Conference play on March 28-29 with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday at UC Santa Barbara. First pitch is noon.
