Santa Barbara, CA - The UC Riverside softball team opened up Big West Conference play with a doubleheader split on Saturday afternoon at UC Santa Barbara. The Highlanders (12-19, 1-1) lost game one 4-1 but used a 10-run seventh inning in the second game to come from behind and defeat the Gauchos for just the first time in the eight-year Division I history of the program.
Trailing 4-1 heading into the top of the seventh, UCR promptly loaded the bases and used a Jessica Vasser RBI single to start their late-game heroics. With one out and the bases loaded, Krystal Marquez was hit by a pitch, and after two consecutive walks that pushed around two more runners, the Highlanders had their first lead of the day, 5-4.
Three UCSB errors and two Highlander hits later, UCR scored six additional runs to take an 11-4 lead. The 10 runs scored in one inning is the most ever in the Division I history of the program. UCR's 11 runs on the day is also the second-most on the year.
Freshman pitcher Amy Lwin tossed four innings of work before giving way to relief pitcher Marissa Alvidrez, who took the mound for the first time in three weeks after an injury. Alvidrez allowed just one run in three innings of work, as she picked up her fourth victory on the season.
In the first game, UCR took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Kameryn Hebenton scored on a wild pitch from Gaucho pitcher Krista Cobb. UCSB responded with two runs in their respective half inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Highlanders were held scoreless, however, in the remaining six innings as the Gauchos scored two insurance runs in the third to take game one of the double header 4-1.
Kameryn Hebenton led the Highlanders with four hits and four runs while batting .571 on the day. Taylor Thomas had three hits and two runs as four other Highlanders picked up a hit.
UC Riverside concludes their opening Big West Conference series with a single game on Sunday, March 29 at 12:00 pm in Santa Barbara.
