UCR Softball Takes Two At Amy S. Harrison Classic

The UC Riverside Softball Team picked up two wins as host of the Amy S Harrison Classic on Friday topping Longwood 14-6 in their first game and winning the second against Providence, 5-3, with a dramatic two-run walk-off home run off the bat of Brooke Hebenton. Day Two of the Amy S Harrison Classic is Saturday, March 14 and has three games on the docket: Longwood and Providence face off at 9 am, followed by UCR vs Providence at 11:30 and the Highlanders against Longwood at 2 pm.
The Highlanders looked headed for a split as they headed into the bottom of the seventh against the Friars trailing 3-1. Tricia Adgar got things started with a bunt single and Kameryn Hebenton followed with a single to right putting runners at first and second. Taylor Thomas also singled to right plating Adgar as Hebenton advanced to third. After an intentional walk to Brittany keeney, Jessica Vasser drove in the tying run with a sac fly to right.
In extra innings, each team begins the frame with a runner on second, and Providence promptly bunted Julie Fowler to third to open the eighth. Gina Rossi followed with a fly ball to center that might have been able to score Fowler, but she didn't risk it instead remaining on third with two outs. Amy Lwin, who got the start for the Highlanders, enduced a fly ball ball to right field off the bat of Jen Abrams to end the the threat.
In the UCR half of the eighth, Katie Curtis was placed on second,and with one out, Brooke Hebenton drilled a two-run walk-of shot over the left field fence for the win.
The result of the Highlanders first game of the day wasn't in question for long as UCR scored two in the first, six in the second and four in the third to take a 12-0 lead. Longwood got on the board with four in the third and both teams scored a pair in the fifth, but the eight-run Highlanders lead activated the Eight-Run Rule and UCR had its eighth win of the season in hand.
Keeney swung the biggest bat for the Highlanders in the game going four for four with a double, two triples and a home run, six RBIs and four runs scored. Thomas also had two hits in UCR's 10-hit attack scoring four runs while Krystal Marquez added three RBIs on a second-inning homer.
