UC Riverside 6, Columbia 4 - Box Score
One day after winning a 14-5 slugfest over the visiting Columbia Lions, the UC Riverside baseball team found itself on the wrong side of a 4-2 pitcher's dual through seven innings at the Riverside Sports Complex. Thankfully for the Highlanders their bats came alive in the eighth and a bases loaded Trevor Hairgrove triple led them to a 6-4 win.
The Highlanders (13-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first off of Lions starter Geoff Whitaker as a Ryan Goetz's triple plated Joey Gonzales and a Tony Nix single brought Goetz homeward. Whitaker eventually worked out of the inning as UCR stranded two.
Columbia (1-8) got one run back in the second as Mike Roberts led off the frame with a single, moved to second on a ground out and took third on a wild pitch. A Ron Williams ground out sent Roberts home halving the Highlanders lead to 2-1.
Both pitchers settled into grooves after that point with Montgomery allowing just one hit over the next four innings and Whitaker getting touched for just two base hits over his next seven innings on the hill.
Montgomery, however, ran into trouble in the top of the seventh as Anthony Potter opened the frame with a double. A ground out advanced Potter to third, and after a walk to Alex Aurrichio, Montgomery struck out Billy Rumpke appearing well on his way to getting out of the jam. But an RBI double by Alex Ferrera put the Lions up 3-2 and an RBI single by Jon Eisen ended the day for Montgomery.
Matt Andriese replaced Montgomery on the mound and worked his way out of the inning thanks to a diving catch in left center by center fielder Carl Uhl.
Harrison Slutsky replaced Whitaker in the eighth and the Highlanders began to mount a two-out rally off of the right-hander. Michael Nesbitt drew a walk and pinch hitter Michael Hur reached on an error by the third baseman. Justin Shultz drew a walk to load the bases bringing up Bryan Horst with the go-ahead runs on the basepaths. Horst worked the count full and sent a long flyball down the left field line that drifted foul, before drawing a walk to cut the Lions lead to one.
Columbia went to the bullpen once more bringing in Rogger Aquino to face Trevor Hairgrove, and Hairgrove drove a triple to right center clearing the bases for UCR's final 6-4 margin of victory.
