UC Riverside 6, Providence 5 - Box Score
Longwood 5, UC Riverside 0 - Box Score
The UC Riverside Softball team (10-17) split its final two games of the Amy S Harrison Classic Saturday defeating Providence, 6-5, and falling to Longwood, 5-0. Nine different players collected hits in the Highlanders come-from-behind win over the Friars in their first game of the day led by Krystal Marquez's two-for-three afternoon. Six different Highlanders scored runs in the game as well. Stephanie Marshall (4-6) picked up the win for UCR throwing a complete game and striking out four.
The Highlanders jumped out to an early lead against Providence hanging three on the board in the top of the second. UCR loaded the bases in the second with two outs for pinch hitter JoJo Mendoza who promptly singled in a run. A second run followed on the play after an error by Friars shortstop Jenna Garcia. The Highlanders picked up their third run of the frame on a perfectly executed double steal that brought Krystal Marquez plateward.
Marshall scattered four hits through the first three innings before running into some trouble in the fourth. She retired the first two batters with groundouts, but Gina Rossi drilled a solo homer to center to cut the Highlanders lead to 3-1. Teresa Bertels followed with a single to center, and Kim Pelland reached on an error by UCR first baseman Jessica Vasser to put runners at first and second. Jenna Garcia singled to center, and the ball got by Marquez scoring two runners and sending Garcia to third. Mary Rose Sheehy singled to right to score the fourth Friars run of the inning before UCR recorded the final out on a fly ball to center.
Providence (3-16) tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth and the Highlanders found themselves down 6-4 heading in to the top of the sixth. Catcher Quinn Redman got the UCR rally started with a one-out double to left center, advancing to third on a Tricia Adgar bunt single. Kameron Hebenton brought Redman home with a single to center, and Taylor Thomas' double to left center plated two more.
Marshall retired the Friars in order in the bottom of the sixth, and left two runners stranded in the seventh to pick up her fourth win of the season.
In the Highlanders second game of the afternoon, Amy Lwin took to the circle looking for a four-game sweep of The Classic. The Lancers (9-10) struck for a single run in the second, and the score stayed 1-0 Longwood until the top of the fifth. The first two batters of the inning reached on a walk and a single, and after a double steal Camille Ketsdever sent a Lwin offering over the fence for a 4-0 Lancers lead.
An RBI single later in the inning put the Highlanders down five, but they could never string anything together on the offensive side of the ball to mount a challenge. Longwood starter Briana Wells only allowed four hits striking out eight in the game as the Highlanders fell 5-0.
