UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Riverside 2 - Box Score
Three UC Santa Barbara pitchers scattered four Highlanders hits Sunday afternoon as the Gauchos took a 3-2 win over UCR in the first game of a two-game non-conference series. It was the first loss for the Highlanders in the team's last six games and only the second in their past 13. They are now one off of the Division I-era record pace set by the 2003 UCR squad which opened the year with a 15-3 mark.
UC Riverside got on the scoreboard first manufacturing a run after a throwing error that allowed Carl Uhl to reach safely to open the first inning. He advanced to second on the miscue, and two groundouts later, the Highlanders had a 1-0 lead.
UCR starter Paul Applebee retired the side in order in the bottom of the first, and only gave up five hits in his five innings pitched. Unfortunately, all five came in the bottom of the second when the Gauchos tacked three runs on the board.
UCSB starter Joe Gardner came out of the game after pitching a pre-determined three innings, and in the top of the fourth, the Highlanders halved the Gauchos' lead off of reliever Mario Hollands. With two outs and runners on first and third, Hollands picked off Brian McConkey at first, but before UCSB could tag McConkey in the subsequent run down, Ryan Goetz was able to scamper home from third to make the score 3-2.
Matt Larkins relieved Applebee in the sixth throwing the final three innings for the Highlanders allowing just one hit and walking one batter. The UCR bats were just as silent, as Hollands worked through the fifth, sixth and seventh innings unscathed before giving way to gave way to David Meals who pitched the final two innings of scoreless baseball.
UC Santa Barbara improved to 13-4 with the win while the Highlanders fell to 14-4. First pitch for Game 2 of the two-game series is slated for 2 pm on Monday, March 23.
NOTES - UCR's Tony Nix extended his hitting-streak to 16 games with a second-inning single.
