Cal State Fullerton 18, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
The first two games of the series between UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton saw the team's split a pair of pitching duels, but the Titans bats woke up Sunday pounding out 15 hits in an 18-1 win.
Paul Applebee got the start for the Highlanders and allowed just two hits through the first two frames, but Cal State Fullerton struck in the third opening the inning with two bunt singles. A wild pitch put the runners at second and third, and a sac fly and RBI single later and the Titans led 2-0.
Meanwhile the UCR bats, hitting just .175 in the series coming into Sunday's game, had just two hits through three innings of play.
The flood gates opened in the fourth as the Titans began the inning with four hits and a hit batsman ending Applebee's day. Dustin Emmons relieved him with nobody out, the bases loaded and trailing 4-0. Unfortunately, the righthander didn't fare much better as a fielders choice and an error brought two runs home, two wild pitches scored another pair, and a three-run homer over the center field fence by Khris Davis made it 11-0.
Emmons settled down over the following two frames, but the Titans touched him and reliever Mike Wolford for four in the seventh.
UCR ended the shutout bid in the eighth on an RBI ground out off of the bat of Eddie Young. Cal State Fullerton tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth off of reliever Kevin Dickey for the final 18-1 score.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Tuesday home tilt against San Diego. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm PT.
