San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside softball team made it three in a row on Saturday as they picked up two more wins at the Mustang Classic hosted by Cal Poly. The Highlanders got their second victory over Temple in as many days as UCR (6-14) had previously defeated the Owls 6-0 on Friday, and followed up that win with a 5-4 victory on Saturday morning. In their rubber game for the day, the Highlanders picked up a 3-1 decision over Sacramento State.
For the third game in a row, Kameryn Hebenton scored the first run for the Highlanders against Temple as she reached on a fielders choice by Taylor Thomas in the first inning. With the bases loaded and Hebenton up to bat in the second, a routine fielder's choice turned into a two-run advantage for the Highlanders as Temple committed two errors allowing two UCR runners to score.
The Owls touched freshman pitcher Amy Lwin for three runs on two hits and one error in the fourth, quickly tying the game at three apiece. The Highlanders battled back and scored the go ahead run in their respective half inning as Tricia Adgar's single up the middle plated pinch runner Dawn Brodersen from third. UCR then added another run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.
In the seventh, the Owls had one last attempt to send the game into extra innings as they scored one run to close the margin to 5-4, but relief pitcher Stephanie Marshall was able to stave off any more runs, giving UCR the win.
Lwin earned her first victory of the year in 5.2 innings of work. Jessica Vasser led UCR with three hits while Adgar added two.
In the rubber game, neither team could get a run across until the sixth inning where both the Highlanders and Hornets each scored one run. Krystal Marquez led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice from Vasser, and was eventually brought home by a Quinn Redman single.
Sac State scored their lone run of the game on a solo blast to left field, tying the game at one apiece. UC Riverside responded with a two-out rally in the top of the seventh as they scored two runs on three hits and one error. With a runner at first base, Marquez's RBI double to left field plated the go-ahead run for the Highlanders, who then added an extra insurance run on a Vasser double in the next at bat.
Brittany Keeney led UCR with three hits while Marquez added two hits and two runs. Marshall picked up her second win of the season pitching a complete four-hit game.
The Highlanders conclude the Mustang Classic with another game against the Hornets on Sunday, March 8 at 1:30 pm.
