Sacramento State 3, UC Riverside 2 - Box Score
San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside softball team closed out the Mustang Classic with a 3-2 loss to Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field. The Highlanders (5-16) had a three-game win streak going after defeating Temple twice and Sac State once during the tournament, but could not make it four in a row as they concluded the weekend with a 3-2 overall record.
Neither team could plate a run until the fifth inning when both clubs scored one across. After a Patricia Adgar single and subsequent advancement to second base on a sacrifice by Kameryn Hebenton, Taylor Thomas tripled down the right field line to send Adgar home, giving UCR a 1-0 lead. The Hornets then touched pitcher Amy Lwin for one run, tying up the ballgame at one apiece.
Stephanie Marshall came in for relief for UCR in the sixth, but allowed the go-ahead runs to score as Sacramento State plated two runs on one hit and one error.
The Highlanders had one last shot to send the game into extra innings in the seventh. With two outs in the top half of the inning, Hebenton tripled down the right field and later scored on a wild pitch, bringing the Highlanders to within one, 3-2. Thomas was then walked and Brittany Keeney was hit by a pitch, but Jojo Mendoza grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning.
Hebenton led UCR with two hits and one run, while Marshall (2-6) picked up the loss for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders return home to the Amy S. Harrison Field for a doubleheader against St. Joseph's on Wednesday, Mar. 11 starting at 1:00 pm.
