UC Riverside 6, CSU Bakersfield 1 - Box Score
Matt Andriese, getting his second straight turn in the Highlanders' weekend rotation, threw eight innings of three-hit ball at CSU Bakersfield Friday afternoon, and UCR picked up its 20th win of the season with a 6-1 decision over the Roadrunners.
The Highlanders (20-8) put three on the board in the early going without the benefit of a hit. CSUB starter Jonathan Montoya (3-3) started off the top of the second with back-to-back free passes issued to Robert Brantly and Daniel Pellegrino. Justin Shultz tried to bunt the runners over, but an error by Roadrunners third baseman Martin Medina loaded the bases with nobody out. Bryan Horst's grounder to short brought home the first run of the game, and an error by shortstop Kyle Richardson on the play kept the bases loaded.
Trevor Hairgrove drew a walk to plate the second run of the game, and Carl Uhl's sac fly to center made it 3-0 UC Riverside. The final line score for the inning - three UCR runs, no Highlanders hits, two Roadrunners errors.
UCR picked up another run in the top of the seventh when Horst opened the inning with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a Hairgrove sac bunt. Uhl drew a walk and Tony Nix brought Horst home with a single to left.
Andriese's (3-1) shutout bid came to an end in the bottom of the eighth when Joey MIlls laced a one-out triple to left center and Brandon Boren's sac fly to right brought him home.
The Highlanders score two more in the top of the ninth as Horst and Hairgrove opened the inning with back-to-back doubles to make it 5-1 UCR. A Uhl sac bunt moved Hairgrove to third and a Nix infield single score the final run of the game.
Dustin Emmons took over for Andriese to start the bottom of the ninth and worked a perfect 1-2-3 inning to close things out.
The Highlanders and Roadrunners finish up their three-game series on Saturday, April 11 at CSUB's Hardt Field. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.
