Pacific 1, UC Riverside 0 - Box Score
UC Riverside 2, Pacific 1 - Box Score
Stockton, CA - The UC Riverside softball team traveled up to Stockton on Friday for a doubleheader at the University of the Pacific, and ended up with their third consecutive split after the first day of play in Big West action. The Tigers scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 1-0 victory over the Highlanders (14-23, 3-5) in game one of the series, but UCR responded by taking a 2-1 margin in game two to even out the series.
In the second game, the Highlanders scored two runs in the third inning off a Taylor Thomas home run - her first of the season. That was all the runs UCR would need as Pacific plated one in the fifth but could get no more across.
Thomas ended up with three hits on the day to lead the Highlanders, while Brittany Keeney and Patricia Adgar each picked up two. Marissa Alvidrez earned her fifth win of the year, pitching all seven innings and striking out three.
In the first game, UCR pitcher Stephanie Marshall kept the Tigers (16-23, 1-7) bats at bay, allowing just five hits and walking none through the first six innings of play. The Highlanders could not take advantage of Marshall's pitching, though, as they picked up just three hits on the day and only had runners in scoring position on two occasions.
With zeroes scattered across the boards for both teams heading into the seventh, Pacific finally got to Marshall as a Kellee Wilson double to left field scored the runner from second base, giving the Tigers the late inning win.
The Highlanders will face off against Pacific in the rubber match on Saturday, a game they are finding themselves in for the third straight week. In UCR's first Conference series at UC Santa Barbara two weeks ago, the Highlanders split on the first day of play to force the rubber match. Last weekend against Cal State Fullerton, UCR again split after the first day's games.
