UC Riverside 5, Pacific 3 - Box Score
The Highlanders Softball Team picked up its first series win in conference play this season and improved to 4-5 in Big West competition with a 5-3 win at Pacific on Saturday afternoon. Marissa Alvidrez (above) came on in relief and pitched four scoreless innings to keep UCR in the ballgame, while Jessica Vasser and Brooke Hebenton each knocked in a pair of runs in the four-run fifth to give the Highlanders the lead.
Amy Lwin took to the circle for the Highlanders to start the game, and after getting a quick 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the first, ran into some trouble in the second. Keliee Wilson singled to left to begin the inning and promptly stole second, Briana Santos, trying to move Wilson to third with a sac bunt, instead wound up at second base with Wilson coming home after Lwin's errant throw to first on the play.
A walk to Amanda Collier put runners at first and second, and another sac bunt moved the runners up 90 feet each with one out in the inning. Brittany Hendrickson beat out a dribbler in front of the plate to load the bases bringing up Karie Wilson. The Tigers' catcher hit a grounder to first and Vasser threw home to get the force, but her throw missed the mark, getting away from Samantha Noddin. Vasser's error allowed Santos to score, and Collier tried to come home as well, but Vassar covered the plate and Noddin's throw nailed the runner keeping the deficit at 2-0.
In the third inning, a Santos infield single brought home Paige Emerson with Pacific's third run of the game. Meanwhile, the Highlanders were unable to get on the scoreboard early on as they managed just two hits through the first three innings.
All that changed in the top of the fourth as, trailing 3-0, Brittany Keeney got hold of a Chelsea Engle offering to open the frame and sent it over the centerfield fence for UCR's first run of the game.
The Highlanders struck again in the fifth as Kameryn Hebenton reached on a two-base error by the centerfielder. Taylor Thomas drew a walk, and Alvidrez sacrificed the pair to second and third with a bunt. Vasser followed with a double down the right field line scoring two. Dawn Broderson came in to pinch run for Vasser, and following a Keeney single and Krystal Marquez ground out that put runners at second and third, Brooke Hebenton's single untied the game bringing Broderson and Keeney plateward for a 5-3 UC Riverside advantage.
Alvidrez moved from dp to pitcher prior to the start of the fourth, and all the junior from Bakersfield, CA did was shutout the Tigers the rest of the way allowing just three hits in four innings.
The Highlanders four conference wins are just one off their Big West Conference benchmark originally set in 2002 and tied by the 2008 squad.
