UC Davis 10, UC Riverside 5 - Box Score
UC Riverside 1, UC Davis 0 - Box Score
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team picked up their Big West Conference record-tying fifth win of the season after their split with UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field. The Aggies (21-20, 5-6) won the first game 10-5 but the Highlanders (16-24, 5-6) picked up a 1-0 win in the second game of the doubleheader. UCR's five conference wins on the year ties the benchmark originally set in 2002 and tied by the 2008 squad.
Freshman pitcher Amy Lwin (4-3) got the starting nod for the Highlanders in the second game of the series, as she worked a complete seven innings of play while allowing just five hits and no runs.
UCR needed just one run to notch the series at one game apiece, and did so in the first inning of play. Kameryn Hebenton started things off with a single to right field and was later sacrificed to second on a Patricia Adgar bunt. Taylor Thomas' single to right field provided the winning run as Hebenton came around to score, giving UCR an early 1-0.
That score would remain intact for the rest of the game as the Highlanders split a pair of games after the first day of play for the fourth straight week.
In the first game of the series, the Aggies touched UCR starter Stephanie Marshall for three runs on three hits in the second inning. She was replaced by Marissa Alvidrez to start the third, who quickly went three up, three down.
The Highlanders then used a two-out three-run rally in the third inning to tie the game. With Brooke Hebenton on second base with two outs, Thomas' single and subsequent advancement to third base plated Hebenton.
After a Jessica Vasser walk to put runners on the corners, Brittany Keeney reached on a error by the UCD pitcher, allowing Thomas to score from third. Alvidrez drew another walk from Aggie pitcher Jessica Hancock, and Krystal Marquez took advantage of another UCD error as she reached base safely, allowing Vasser to score from third and knotting the game at three apiece.
UC Davis responded in the top of the next inning as Jessica Castillo sent a solo blast over the left center wall, quickly giving the Aggies a 4-3 lead. Not to be outdone, Brooke Hebenton promptly followed suit by drilling a Highlander home run to left center field to start the fourth inning, tying the ball game at four apiece.
However, with two runners on base in the fifth for the Aggies, Marissa Araujo's home run to center field gave UCD a 7-4 lead. UCR got one run back in the sixth, but UC Davis used another three-run home run in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach, winning by the final score of 10-5.
Kameryn Hebenton led UCR on the day with three hits and an RBI, while four other Highlanders recorded two hits.
The rubber match between these teams is scheduled for 12:00 pm on Sunday, April 19 at Amy S. Harrison Field.
