UC Irvine 12, UC Riverside 9 - Box Score
UC Riverside held a 6-3 lead through four innings against No. 3 UC Irvine, but the Anteaters (26-10, 11-1) scored three in the fifth and four in the sixth on their way to a 12-9 win over the Highlanders (20-13, 2-7) Sunday at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Trailing 2-0 after the first half inning of play, UCR turned the tables on the Anteaters in the bottom half of the inning as the Highlanders sent nine batters to the plate. Carl Uhl opened the frame with a double, and after a Bryan Horst groundout advanced him to third, Michael Hur's single up the middle brought him home with UCR's first run.
Ryan Goetz singled to right center to put runners at first and second and Hur came homeward when Robert Brantly singled through the right side. Michael Nesbitt's double scored two more to make it 4-2 UCR and Dan Pellegrino singled up the middle to score Nesbitt chasing UCI starter Crosby Slaught with just one out in the inning. Kyle Necke came in to replace Slaught and picked up the final outs of the inning.
The Anteaters got one back in the second off of Highlanders starter Paul Applebee when Eric Deragisch's sac fly to center brought home Jordan Leyland. UC Riverside Head Coach Doug Smith was ejected from the game in the inning by first base umpire Ruben Chavira following a check swing call that went against the Highlanders.
UCR got the run back a half inning later as Hur doubled with two outs and Goetz singled through the right side to bring Hur home. Goetz was thrown out at first on the play to end the inning after straying too far from first after rounding the bag. First base coach Rusty McNamara joined Smith in the Highlanders clubhouse after arguing the call.
Both pitchers settled down after the second, putting zeroes on the board through the third and fourth, but the Anteaters scored three more in the fifth to tie the game and chase Applebee. Matt Larkins (1-1) took over getting the last out of the fifth, but UCI touched him for four runs in the sixth as Larkins gave way to Kolby Moore.
Trailing 10-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh Hur and Goetz singled to open the inning to put runners on first and second. Brock Bardeen replaced Matt DuFour and Brantly greeted him with a high drive to right field. Right fielder Tommy Reyes spun around going back for the ball, but had time to collect himself and make the catch up against the wall. Both runners advanced on the play, and Hur eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Tony Nix.
The Anteaters got the run back in the top of the eighth, however, as Reyes tripled off of Moore to start the inning and came home on a sac fly by Crumlich. UCR scored two in the ninth for the final 12-9 margin.
DuFour (1-0) picked up the win for UCI going one and two thirds innings in relief while Larkins (1-1) took the loss for UCR.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Tuesday, April 21 home game against UCLA at 6 pm.
