UC Riverside 5, Cal State Northridge 4 - Box Score
For the second day in a row, Highlanders designated hitter Michael Hur found himself in the middle of the action against Cal State Northridge as his two-run blast out to left center in the sixth erased a 3-1 Matadors lead. One inning later, RBIs from Trevor Hairgrove and Carl Uhl gave UCR the lead and Joseph Kelly slammed the door in the ninth for his seventh save as the Highlanders (23-13, 4-7) picked up the 5-4 win.
With the victory, UCR climbed into seventh place in the Big West, just two games behind fourth place UC Santa Barbara.
Matt Andriese (4-2) got the start for UC Riverside and he scattered five hits and a walk over six innings, but the Matadors (17-24, 4-10) touched him for single runs in the first, third and fourth innings as Cal State Northridge built an early 3-1 lead.
The Highlanders offense, which scored 41 runs over its previous four games, struggled against Matadors starter Justen Gorski as he faced just two batters over the minimum through the first five innings. In the sixth, however, Hairgrove doubled to start the inning, and after a Uhl fly out to right and MIchael Nesbitt pop up to short, Hur homered to even the score at three apiece.
Still tied heading into the top of the seventh, Joey Gonzales walked to open the frame, stole second, and advanced to third on a Brian McConkey groundout. Hairgrove's two-out single to center scored Gonzales and Uhl's double to right center plated Hairgrove.
Dustin Emmons pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth innings for UCR, and in the ninth, the Highlanders turned the ball over to Kelly. The preseason All-American got Chris Hannick to fly out to right, but CJ Belanger doubled to center with one out to bring the tying run to the plate. Justin DeMarco struck out for what should have been the second out of the inning, but UCR catcher Robert Brantly couldn't hold on to the ball. DeMarco reached first on the wild pitch and Belanger advanced to third.
Tommy Simis grounded into a fielder's choice bringing Belanger home to make the score 5-4. That put the bat in the hands of Jeff Pruitt who hit a high pop up into foul territory back of the plate, and Brantly made an off-balance grab to end the ballgame.
