Northridge, CA - The UC Riverside softball team lost a pair of games at Cal State Northridge on Saturday afternoon in Big West Conference play. The Matadors took game one 1-0 and followed that up with a 2-1 come-from-behind win in the second game.
This marks the first time the Highlanders have lost both games of a doubleheader in conference play this season. UCR had also won the second game of each series prior to today's loss. The Highlanders drop to 17-26 overall and 6-8 in Big West play.
In game one, UCR tallied three additional hits over the Matadors, 5-2, but could not get any runs across as they were shutout for the third time in conference play.
CSUN picked up the game winning run in the fourth inning off UCR starter Stephanie Marshall. Jaclyn Rymer was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a throwing error by Brooke Hebenton after a fielders choice by Micah Putnam. Both runners then stole second and third respectively, and a Tracy Allen ground out to Kameryn Hebenton scored Rymer from third.
UCR threatened in both the six and seventh innings as they got runners in scoring position, but could not get that tying run across, falling 1-0.
Marissa Alvidrez and Kameryn Hebenton led UCR with two hits each, while Jessica Vasser picked up one. Marshall falls to 6-11 with the loss, while CSUN pitcher Hannah Fraijo earned the win.
Alvidrez got the starting nod for the Highlanders in the second game, and helped her own cause by belting a solo shot to right center in the second inning for an early 1-0 UCR lead. She held the Matadors scoreless until the fifth inning, but CSUN was able to tie the game at one apiece off a Lauren Olivas single up the middle.
The Matadors continued their come-from-behind heroics as they scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Krystal Raphael opened up the frame with a single up the middle, and was later replaced by Sarah Kahn-Shamout on the bag. Kahn-Shamout then advanced to second on a wild pitch from Alvidrez and later reached third on a sacrifice bunt by Olivas. An Alexandria Alvarado single to left field scored the winning run for CSUN, helping the Matadors close out the doubleheader with a sweep.
Alvidrez allowed nine hits in 6.1 innings of work, falling to 6-12 on the season. Deborah Duran got the win for the Matadors.
The Highlanders conclude their three-game set with Cal State Northridge at noon on Sunday, April 26.
