CSUN 5, UCR 3 - Box Score
Northridge, CA - After dropping both games of the doubleheader on Saturday at Cal State Northridge, the UC Riverside softball team was looking to get back in the win column with Sunday's third and final game of the series. The Matadors proved too tough, however, taking the finale with a 5-3 come from behind victory. UCR got swept for just the first time in Big West play all season, dropping to 17-27 on the year, 6-9 in conference play.
The Matadors struck first as they tallied two runs to open the ball game. Micah Putnam's two RBI homer to left field off UCR starter Stephanie Marshall gave CSUN an early 2-0 lead.
The Highlanders battled back and took the lead in the third inning, posting three runs thanks to a pair of home runs by Taylor Thomas and Brittany Keeney. Kameryn Hebenton led off the frame with a single to right field and was brought home two batters later by Thomas' second long ball of the year. With two outs, Keeney then connected on her third blast of the season, giving UCR a 3-2 lead.
That lead was short-lived, however, as the Matadors reclaimed the lead in the sixth inning, scoring three runs off four hits. Putnam singled to left center to open the inning, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jaclyn Rymer's single and subsequent stolen base put runners at second and third with no outs. Tracy Allen then tripled down the right field line, scoring both runners from base. After two consecutive outs, a Lauren Olivas RBI single to right field made it 5-3 Matadors.
UCR threatened in the top of the seventh inning. With Thomas at third base and two outs, CSUN intentionally walked Marissa Alvidrez to put runners on the corners. Jojo Mendoza then pinch hit for Krystal Marquez, but struck out looking to end the game.
Thomas led the Highlanders with two hits, two RBI, and one run, while six other players recorded a hit.
UCR has two Big West series remaining on their docket, both home at Amy S. Harrison Field. Preseason favorites Long Beach State come calling on Saturday-Sunday May 2-3, and No. 22 ranked Cal Poly enters Riverside on Friday-Saturday May 8-9.
