Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team split with Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon in Big West Conference action at Amy S. Harrison Field. The Highlanders (18-28, 7-10) used a come-from-behind 5-3 victory in game one, but fell 4-1 to the 49ers (30-19, 11-6) in game two. The rubber match between these teams is set for noon on Sunday, May 3.
In the first game, Long Beach State got on board with two runs in the second off UCR starter Stephanie Marshall. One inning later, the 49ers again threatened and the Highlanders replaced Marshall with Marissa Alvidrez. The Bakersfield, CA native allowed one run to score in the third, but then held Long Beach scoreless the rest of the game.
Alvidrez helped her own cause in the fourth inning, belting a two-RBI home run to left field to bring UCR within one, 3-2.
Two innings later, the Highlanders completed their comeback by scoring three runs on three hits and one error. Kameryn Hebenton led off the inning by drilling a double to left center. Patricia Adgar then reached on an error by the pitcher, advancing Hebenton to third. Two batters later, Jessica Vasser was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Alvidrez's RBI single then scored Hebenton from third, and a Brittany Keeney double to right field brought home the winning runs.
Alvidrez earned her seventh victory of the season, pitching five innings and striking out three. She also led the Highlanders with two hits and three RBI, while four other players recorded hits. Brooke Turner suffered the loss for Long Beach.
Game two started out as a pitchers duel with both teams recording zeros on the scoreboard through the first four innings. The 49ers finally got runners across in the fifth, however, touching UCR starter Amy Lwin for four runs on six hits and one error.
UCR got one run back in the sixth, as a Keeney single down the left field line plated Taylor Thomas from second base. But the Highlanders could not complete another comeback, falling by the final score of 4-1.
