Long Beach Completes Comeback, 5-3, Takes Series From Softball

Riverside, CA - Through six innings of play on Sunday afternoon, the UC Riverside softball team was looking to win their third Big West series of the season, but Long Beach State scored three runs in the top of seventh inning to come-from-behind and take a 5-3 victory over the Highlanders at Amy S. Harrison Field.
UCR starter Amy Lwin held the 49ers (31-19, 12-6) without a run through the first three innings of play. The Highlanders (18-29, 7-11) bats were hot as they strung together two consecutive innings with runs, scoring two in the second and one in the third.
With runners at first and second with two-outs in bottom of the second inning, Kameryn Hebenton laced a single to right field, plating her sister Brooke Hebenton from second base. Patricia Adgar then followed that up with a single up the middle, scoring Krystal Marquez from third to give UCR a 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, UCR got another run on board as Marissa Alvidrez hit her team-leading fifth home run of the year, extending the Highlanders lead to 3-0.
UCR's lead did not hold up for long, however, as Long Beach State responded in the fourth with two runs off a Brittany Keeney error. Alvidrez then came on to pitch and got out of the inning without another run across.
Alvidrez held the 49ers scoreless through the next two innings of play, but gave up a three RBI home run to Jonae Perez in the top of the seventh inning, giving Long Beach a 5-3 advantage and the win as the Highlanders went three up, three down in the bottom of the seventh.
The two teams split the doubleheader on Saturday, so with their win Long Beach took home the series two games to one.
Softball concludes their season with a three-game set against #21 Cal Poly on Friday-Saturday May 8-9. Friday's doubleheader starts at 1:00 pm with the single game on Saturday beginning at noon.
