Cal Poly 8, UC Riverside 2 - Box Score
Cal Poly 4, UC Riverside 0 - Box Score
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team played host to No. 21 ranked Cal Poly on Friday afternoon in a Big West Conference doubleheader, but fell 8-2 and 4-0 to the Mustangs at Amy S. Harrison Field. The Highlanders drop to 18-31 on the year and 7-13 in conference play, while Cal Poly improves to 38-10, 17-3. UCR's final game of the season is set for noon on Saturday, May 9, with senior day festivities starting at approximately 11:50.
The Mustangs opened up game one with a five run first inning. Anna Cahn hit a three-RBI home run off UCR starter Stephanie Marshall to give Cal Poly a 3-0 lead. Marissa Alvidrez then came in for relief and allowed two additional runs to score, giving the Mustangs an early 5-0 lead.
The Highlanders chipped away at the Mustang lead, however, getting single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings respectively. With two outs and Kameryn Hebenton on second base in the first, Alvidrez singled to right field plating Hebenton. In the second inning, a Krystal Marquez single brought home Brooke Hebenton from third base, closing the gap to 5-2.
Cal Poly responded in the next inning by scoring three runs off two hits and two errors, extending their lead to 8-2. That score would remain intact the rest of the game as both teams put up zeros in the remaining innings.
Marshall (6-13) was saddled with the loss for UCR, while Cahn (26-5) picked up the win for the Mustangs.
In the second game of Friday's doubleheader, UCR starter Amy Lwin kept the Mustangs' bats at bay through two innings, but an error by Marquez in the third inning allowed a run to score. Alvidrez entered the game in relief in the fifth inning, but gave up one run in the fifth and two in the sixth, giving Cal Poly a 4-0 lead.
UCR could not get runners past second base in the remaining three innings of the game, falling by the final score of 4-0.
Patricia Adgar led the Highlanders with three hits while Katie Curtis and Marquez each recorded one.
Game Notes
Cal Poly is the sixth ranked team the Highlanders have faced this season. They are now 0-7 against top-25 opponents during the 2009 campaign.
The Highlanders lost both games of a conference doubleheader for just the second time all year. UCR had split five of the six series coming into today's contests.
