UC Riverside 2, San Diego 1 - Box Score
UC Riverside's five-game losing streak is but a distant memory, and following a 2-1 win at San Diego Tuesday, in its place stands a five-game winning streak. The turnaround couldn't have come at a better time as the Highlanders (25-13) head into the final month of the regular season with postseason possibilities still up for grabs.
Ryan Platt got the start against the Toreros and pitched his best game since a seven-inning, two-hit effort at UC Santa Barbara on March 23. The senior from Chatsworth, CA shut down the San Diego offense, which came into the game toting a .320 batting average and seven runs scored per game.
After San Diego's Chris Engell led off the bottom of the first with a double to left field, the Toreros went without another hit until the fifth inning. San Diego (27-18) put baserunners on in the second (error) and fourth (walk), but both of those runners were thrown out trying to steal by Platt's battery mate, Dan Pellegrino.
In the fifth, the Toreros put together a two-out rally when Bryan Harr singled through the left side, and Jon Hotta followed with an RBI double down the left field line.
That pulled San Diego even with the Highlanders who scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth when Pellegrino's sacrifice fly brought Ryan Goetz home from third. Toreros relief pitcher Chris Jensen gave up the run as San Diego intentionally went with a four-pitcher committee for the non-conference mid-week contest.
The Highlanders got the run back in the top of the sixth when they loaded the bases with no outs off of the Toreros third pitcher of the day, Darrin Campbell (3-4). Pellegrino hit into a double play to plate the run, but that was all the scoring UC Riverside could muster in the inning.
Platt continued his dominance of San Diego in the sixth retiring the Toreros in order, and after James Meador led off the seventh with a single, Platt erased him on a double-play grounder to short. In the eighth, Platt struck out the side, and in the ninth he gave way to UCR closer Joseph Kelly.
Tony Strazzara touched the preseason All-American for a one-out double, but a fielders choice and a grounder to short sealed the win for the Highlanders. The save was Kelly's ninth of the season and the 21st of his career which ties him with Scott Tebbetts (1994-95) for first place on the Highlanders career saves chart.
