22, Not 21, Proves Lucky In Highlanders 22-5 Win Over UNLV Rebels

The number 22 is typically a bad thing in the Entertainment Capital of the World, but it helped UC Riverside re-write the team record books Tuesday night as they topped the University of Las Vegas 22-5 in a non-conference baseball game. The 22 runs are the most runs the Highlanders have ever scored in a Division I baseball game and the fifth highest total in the program's history. UCR scored 21 against Oregon State on February 23, 2002 and a program-best 26 against Chico State on February 8, 1996.
The Highlanders also tied the team's Division I record with 24 hits and their four home runs on the night tied for the most they have ever hit since joining the Big West Conference. The win improves UCR's record to 28-14 on the year and moves them one game closer to a possible NCAA Tournament berth.
In all, 12 Highlanders recorded base hits with 10 players picking up two or more safeties led by Ryan Goetz (above) and Trevor Hairgrove each of whom had three. Five players knocked in two or more runs with Bryan Horst and Tony Nix knocking in four apiece. And eight members of the team scored two or more runs as Dan Pellegrino, Hairgrove and Horst each led the way with three each.
On the defensive side of the ball Ryan Platt (4-0) got the start for the Highlanders going six innings, giving up seven hits, allowing three earned runs and striking out six. Matt Larkins, Mike Wolford and Kolby Moore each pitched an inning in relief.
UCR travels to UC Davis this weekend for a three-game Big West Conference series with the Aggies. Game times are 2:30 pm Friday, 1 pm Saturday and 1 pm Sunday.
