Highlanders Can't Hold On To Lead For Second Straight Day, Fall 5-4 To UCD

UC Davis 5, UC Riverside 4 - Box Score
While yesterday's loss to UC Davis may have been a dip in the road on UC Riverside's quest for an NCAA berth, Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Aggies probably qualifies as an actual pothole. The loss drops the Highlanders to 28-16 overall and 7-10 in the Big West Conference with nine games to play.
UCR had a lead for the second straight day over UC Davis, and for the second straight day they were unable to hold on. In the top of the the third, Michael Hur's RBI single and Dan Pellegrino's RBI double turned a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 Highlanders advantage. Matt Montgomery, coming back from an injury, threw the first two innings for UCR and turned the ball over to Matt Andriese to start the bottom of the third.
The freshman from Redlands, CA struck out the first batter he faced, but a wild pitch on the play allowed Michael Aldrete to reach first. A bunt back to the pitcher erased Aldrete and put Daniel Cepin at first, and Justin Schafer followed with a double to center to pull the Aggies to within one. Ty Kelly singled home Schafer to tie the game before the Highlanders got out of the inning.
UC Davis took the lead the following inning as they put runners on first and third with two outs. Andriese's second wild pitch of the day allowed Aldrete to score making it 4-3.
The Highlanders picked up just one hit in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but they opened the seventh with back-to-back singles by Tony Nix and Hur, and an error by Aggies leftfielder Kelly allowed Nix to score the tying run.
The score was still tied at four in the bottom of the eighth, when Grant Himeise opened the inning with a single. UCR Head Coach Doug Smith brought in closer Joseph Kelly to replace Andriese, and the preseason All-American picked up two ground ball outs that moved Himeise to third. The next batter, Scott Heylman, singled to right scoring Himeise with what would prove to be the winning run.
In the top of the ninth, the Highlanders had runners on first and third with one out, but the Aggies turned Pellegrino's grounder to second into a double play and the ballgame was over.
The final game of the three-game series between UC Davis and UC Riverside is scheduled for Sunday, May 10 at 1 p.m. PT
