Men's Soccer Hosts San Jose State In Home Opener Sunday At 2:30 pm
9/11/2009 10:39:31 AM | Men's Soccer
The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team opens its 2009 home schedule this Sunday against San Jose State this Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and they are still in search of their first win of the season following three straight one-goal road losses to begin the year. The last time UCR lost three consecutive one-goal games was in the 2005 season—1-0 at Cal State Northridge on Oct. 22; 1-0 vs. UC Irvine on Oct. 26; and 1-0 at San Francisco on Oct. 28.
The Highlanders' offense has come alive of late as the two goals the team netted at CSU Bakersfield on September 11—one by Robert Cate, and another by Joel Garcia (pictured)— were the most they scored since a 3-2 win over Gonzaga on September 14 of last year.
UCR will need all of the offensive it can muster on Sunday as they haven't scored against the Spartans in each of their last two meetings.
GAME NOTES
THE REPLACEMENTS
The Highlanders, who scored 22 goals during the 2008 season, will need to replace the offensive production of their leading scorer from a year ago, Joel Crompton (8 goals, 1 assist, 17 points) who finished his UCR career ranked tied for second in career points and fourth in goals scored. Eight other Highlanders dented the back of the net in 2008 led by Cesar Diaz's four goals, Robert Cate's three and Nathan Paterson's two.
ALL-TOURNEY TEAM
UC Riverside's David Lozano and Chris Smith were named to the Saint Mary's All-Tournament Team for their performances in the Highlanders' first two matches of the season against Sacramento State and Saint Mary's. The Highlanders dropped both games of the tournament by the thinnest of margins — 1-0 at Sacramento State on September 4 and 2-1 in overtime at Saint Mary's on September 6.
20-20
Last year, goalkeeper Ryan Schmitz and defender David Watson were the only two members of the team to play and start in all 20 matches.
NATHAN'S FAMOUS
Nathan Paterson enters the 2009 season ranked fifth on the UCR career points list and needs just seven on the year to move into second place behind Luc Harrington (2001-04).
FIRING BLANKS
UCR's 1-0 shutout loss at Sacramento State marked the first time the Highlanders have been shut out since October 8, 2008 against Cal Poly (1-0).
OVERTIME BLUES
The last time UC Riverside won a match that went into overtime was on November 12, 2005 in a 2-1 win over Cal State Fullerton. Since that time, the Highlanders are 0-3-11 in overtime matches.
