Men's Soccer Nets First Win Of Season With 2-1 Victory Over San Jose State
9/13/2009 6:57:26 PM | Men's Soccer
After three heartbreaking one-goal losses to start the season, UC Riverside's Men's Soccer Team (1-3-0) picked up its first win of the year Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over San Jose State (1-4-0). Tyler Wilson's (pictured) first goal of the year was the eventual game-winner.
All of the scoring in the match came in the first half with the Highlanders taking a 1-0 lead with 11:15 gone as Normando Mariscal's header off of a Jonathan Lester save put UCR up 1-0. Less than nine minutes later, Tyler Wilson took a cross from Michael Galland and deposited it into the back of the net for a 2-0 UC Riverside advantage.
The Spartans cut the lead to one with 29:23 gone in the first when Oscar Yniguez connected on a free kick from just outside the box that eluded Highlanders goalkeeper Ryan Schmitz who was making his first start of the year.
That score held up the remainder of the match, as the Highlanders picked up their first win since October 18 of last year in a 2-1 win over then seventh ranked UC Davis.
