Second Half Rally Falls Short For Women's Hoops At The Beach

Long Beach, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team dropped a 55-46 decision to Long Beach State in both team's Big West Conference opener on Saturday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid. UCR falls to 3-10 on the year and 0-1 in conference play as they have now lost seven of their last eight contests.
The Highlanders came back from a nine-point deficit early in the second half but could not hold on as the 49ers (5-8, 1-0) used a late rally to take home the victory.
Senior Amber Cox (pictured) led UC Riverside with 13 points while Rhaya Neabors added 10. Three Highlanders tallied eight rebounds apiece as UCR out rebounded the Beach 44-38. Karina Figueroa of LBSU led all players with 17 points.
The Highlanders opened the second half by scoring nine straight points to tie the game at 31 apiece while holding the 49ers scoreless through the first six and a half minutes. They then took a six-point lead, 40-34, off a Cox layup at the 8:50 mark.
The Beach then answered with a 15-4 run over the next seven minutes to take a 52-44 lead with a minute and a half remaining as the final score became 55-46.
In the first half, LBSU quickly scored five points before an Alyssa Morris jumper in the lane and a Rha. Neabors layup at the 16:51 mark put UCR down just one, 5-4. However, that was as close as the Highlanders would get in the period as the 49ers outscored them 18-4 over the next eight minutes to take a 23-8 lead.
UC Riverside was then able to close the margin to seven with just under five remaining in the half as they scored eight unanswered points, 23-16. The Beach, though, who shot 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from the field and 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from three-point range, entered the locker room with a 31-22 advantage.
The Highlanders struggled from the field early on and ended the half hitting just 24.2 percent (8-of-33) of their shots, including 1-of-12 (8.3 percent) from beyond the arc. UC Riverside improved their shooting percentage in the second half by hitting 10-of-31 from the field but hit just two long balls all evening.
UCR scored 13 points off 19 Long Beach turnovers and had 22 in the paint compared to 16 for the Beach.
The Highlanders return to the court as they travel to CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday, Jan. 6 for a non-conference match up beginning at 7:00 pm.
