Box Score - CSU Bakersfield 85, UC Riverside 70
Bakersfield, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball traveled to CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday evening for their final non-conference match of the season, but fell to the Roadrunners 85-70 at the Icardo Center. The Highlanders (3-11) were shorthanded on the night as they dressed just seven players at tip, dropping their fourth straight game and eight of the last nine.
Junior Brittany Waddell (pictured) led a quartet of Highlanders in double-figure scoring with a season-high 18 points while Rheya Neabors added 14, Alyssa Morris had 13, and Rhaya Neabors chipped in 12.
Morris was just one rebound shy of a double-double as she grabbed nine rebounds while Marissa Rivera was also just short of a double-double as she grabbed nine rebounds and had eight points.
UCR came out of the gate strong by scoring the first four points on two Morris layups while holding CSUB (8-8) scoreless until the 16:33 mark. A Rivera jumper 14 seconds later put the Highlanders up 6-2, but a subsequent 8-0 Roadrunner rally over the next four minutes gave CSUB a 10-6 advantage.
The Highlanders played catch up until back-to-back three pointers by Waddell and Ashley Collier around the six minute mark gave UCR a 27-24 lead. After trading buckets for the next few trips down the court, CSU Bakersfield closed out the half on a 12-4 run to take a 46-39 lead into the locker rooms.
In the second half, both teams traded buckets through the first nine minutes until CSUB went on a 9-2 run to open up a 71-58 lead with eight minutes remaining. They then pushed their advantage out to 18 with a minute to go as they went on to claim the 85-70 victory.
For the game UCR shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) but had 22 turnovers, four higher than their season average, while out rebounding the Runners 44 to 36.
The Highlanders return to Big West Conference play at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Jan. 9 with tip off slated for 5:00 pm.
