Second Half Rally Propels UCR to 64-53 Win Over Anteaters

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team used a 24-4 run to close out the game on Saturday evening as they came-from-behind for a 64-53 victory over UC Irvine at the Student Recreation Center in Big West Conference action. The Highlanders have now won four straight games for the first time all year and improve to 7-12 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
UCR was down 49-40 with 8:07 remaining in the game but went on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 51 all en route to their 24-4 run down the stretch. The Highlanders shot a blistering 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the field in the period while limiting the Anteaters (6-14, 3-5) to just four points in the last eight minutes of play.
Rhaya Neabors (pictured) led UCR with a career-high tying 21 points while Alyssa Morris added 17 and Rheya Neabors had 16. Mikah Maly-Karros scored 21 points for UCI and had a game-high 12 rebounds.
In the first half, neither team led by more than four points as both squads were cold from the field, making a combined 12 field goals in the period. The Anteaters forced 14 Highlander turnovers but also tallied 10 of their own as they led 18-17 at the break. The Highlanders' 17 points in the first half is the lowest all year and the lowest since a 16 point first half at UC Davis on Feb. 7, 2009.
The tables turned in the second period as UCR forced 10 UCI turnovers while only loosing the ball six times themselves as they outscored the Anteaters 47-35 after the break.
For the game, the Highlanders shot 53.5 percent (23-of-43), their second-highest percentage of the year, while limiting UC Irvine to 30.4 percent (14-of-46), the second-lowest of any opponent all year.
UC Riverside continues Big West play on Thursday, Jan. 28 with a 7:00 pm tip at UC Davis.
