Pacific 72, UC Riverside 57 Box Score
The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team made its national television debut Saturday night as ESPN2 descended upon the Student Recreation Center. Unfortunately the Pacific Tigers spoiled the party nailing 11 three-pointers on their way to a 72-57 Big West Conference win. The Highlanders fell to 8-13 overall and 2-7 in conference, while Pacific maintained their spot atop the Big West standings at 14-6, 7-1.
The game was tight for much of the first half with the Tigers holding on to a five point lead with 14:17 gone in the period at 25-20, but they scored 12 of the next 14 points in the game and took a 13-point lead into the locker room. Pacific nailed six of 14 three-pointers in the period and committed just two turnovers in building the lead.
Bryson Hampton kept the Highlanders close in the first making all four of his field goal attempts, but the rest of the team was seven of 24 from the field. Sam Willard led Pacific at the break with 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting.
It was more of the same in the second as the Tigers pushed their lead to 20 with 4:07 gone in the period, 48-28. An Allen Huddleston three-pointer gave Pacific its biggest lead of the night at 66-43 with 8:00 to go.
That lit a bit of a fire under the Highlanders as they rattled off eight straight points, but they were never able to cut the deficit under 13 the rest of the way.
Sean Cunningham scored nine points in the second half to lead UC Riverside with 11 on the night. Hampton finished with 10 points. Willard finished with a game-high 20 and Demetrece Young (13 points) and Joe Ford (10) joined him in double digit scoring.
Next up for UC Riverside is a Thursday, February 4 home meeting with Cal State Northridge. Tip time is 7 pm PT.
