Riverside - The UC Riverside volleyball team picked up its second win of the 2010 season and stopped a seven-match skid by sweeping CSU Bakersfield 25-22, 25-22 and 25-23 in non-conference action at the Student Recreation Center on Saturday night.
The Highlanders (2-14) have now won three straight matches against the Runners (0-20).
Even though UCR committed 14 service errors—the most all season—they recorded their best team hitting percentage of 2010 with a .333 clip.
Kelly Simpson (pictuerd) led the Highlanders with a game-high 11 kills while Shelby LeDuff added 10. Megan Patterson tallied 10 digs to lead UCR, while Courtney Wypiszynski had 30 assists.
CSU Bakersfield led early in the first set at 6-3, but kills by LeDuff and Simpson combined with an attack error from the Runners allowed the Highlanders to tie the set at six apiece. The set went back and forth as CSUB again took a lead a 9-6, but UCR tied it at 12.
From that point on, the Highlanders always led by a point or two until an Amanda Vialpando kill gave UCR the 25-22 first-set win.
In the second set, there were 12 tie scores and 5 lead changes, the last coming when the Highlanders were down 22-20 and rallied to tie the set at 22 apiece.
UCR would end up taking the lead 23-22 on an attack error by CSUB, and winning the set off kills from Bianca Endersby and Simpson.
The Roadrunners took a 10-7 lead early in the third set, but three straight points from the Highlanders tied things up. CSU Bakersfield again took a three-point lead at 17-14, but UCR again rallied back to the tie the set at 17.
UC Riverside didn't take the lead until 20-19 on block assists from Simpson and Shannon Moyneur, but once they did they kept their advantage and closed out the match 25-23.
The Highlanders return to Big West Conference action on Friday, Oct. 8 with a 7:00 pm match at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA.
