Late Rally Not Enough As Arizona State Defeats Women's Basketball 58-47

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team was looking to improve to 2-0 for the first time in its Division I history on Sunday afternoon, but dropped a 58-47 decision to visiting Arizona State at the Student Recreation Center.
Neither team led by more than five in the first half, and the Sun Devils (2-0) took a 24-21 lead into the locker room at half time.
The teams traded baskets to open the second period, but ASU took control of the game shortly thereafter with a 7-0 run to push their lead to double digits for the first time. It was still a nine-point lead with 13:38 remaining, when the Sun Devils put together an 8-0 run, giving them a 44-27 advantage.
The Highlanders (1-1) slowly chipped away at the deficit reducing the lead to nine at 49-40 with 5:59 to go, and two minutes later, a Tre'Shonti Nottingham free throw put UC Riverside within six at 49-43. ASU scored the next six unanswered points, however, to effectively end the game.
Alyssa Morris led the Highlanders with 12 points while Rhaya Neabors added 10. Dymond Simon led all players with 15 points for the Sun Devils.
In the early going, the Highlanders turned a 4-2 deficit into a 9-4 advantage by scoring seven consecutive points. The tides changed as ASU become hot, scoring nine straight to take an 13-9 lead.
Morris stopped the Highlanders drought with a three-pointer, and Brittany Waddell made a fastbreak layup to give UCR a 14-13 lead at the 6:10 mark.
The teams stayed within four points of each other the rest of the half as Arizona State entered the break up 24-21. Both teams shot about 30.0 percent from the field in the period, while UCR benefited from 3-of-4 three pointers while holding ASU to none.
For the game, the Sun Devils dominated the glass, outrebounding the Highlanders 50 to 23. Arizona State also converted 26 free throws compared to just 11 for UC Riverside.
The Highlanders conclude their three-game opening homestand next Friday, November 19 against Seattle at 2:00 pm at the Student Recreation Center.
