Chicago, IL - The UC Riverside women's basketball team advanced to the championship game at the Maggie Dixon Classic on Friday afternoon after a 60-44 victory over Morgan State in the first game of DePaul's tournament.
Brittany Waddell led three Highlanders in double figure scoring with 17 points on 6-of-14 from the field including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Alyssa Morris added 11 points while Rheya Neabors recorded a double-double with a career-high 12 rebounds and 10 points.
The Highlanders 3-1 start to the season ties the 2005-06 squad for the best start in the Division I history of the program.
UC Riverside enjoyed a 26-9 lead at the half, but Morgan State (3-2) continuously chipped away at the lead and got it to single digits on a free throw with 7:41 left in the game.
The Bears cut it to eight on two occasions in the next minute and a half, but could never get any closer as the Highlanders pushed their advantage back out to double digits for the 60-44 win.
UCR took advantage of 19 points off Morgan State turnovers and had 28 bench points compared to just eight for the Bears. The Highlanders also won the battle of the boards 42-33.
In the first half, the Highlanders got on board first with a Natasha Hadley jumper off the backboard, but Morgan State rattled off eight straight points to take an 8-2 advantage at the 14:32 mark.
However, a Brittany Waddell three-pointer on the next possession put a stop to the Bears rally and ignited UCR's offense as they put on a 17-0 run over the next 10 minutes to take a 19-8 advantage.
The Highlanders limited Morgan State to just a free throw the remainder of the half as UC Riverside took a 26-9 margin into the break. Those nine points scored by Morgan State in the first half is the lowest in the Division I history of the program.
The Highlanders conclude the Maggie Dixon Classic tomorrow at 5:00 PST pm against DePaul.
