The Highlanders are back in the driver’s seat with regards to the postseason following Wednesday’s 74-57 win over UC Irvine at the Student Recreation Center. The win moved UC Riverside into a tie with the Anteaters at 4-9 in the Big West. The Highlanders own the tiebreaker with UCI, however, having beaten them twice this season which means UCR currently controls its own destiny over the final three conference games of the year.
Before they hit the road for those final three Big West contests, however, it is ESPN BracketBuster time for UC Riverside as the Penguins of Youngstown State invade the SRC for the final home game of the 2009-10 season. The Highlanders will honor their six seniors prior to the 6 pm PT tip off, and UCR fans who are unable to attend may listen to all the action as The Voice of the Highlanders, John Ramey, brings the call to gohighlanders.com.
UC Riverside is undefeated in four prior BracketBuster games having knocked off Southeast Missouri (69-61, Feb. 18, 2006), Idaho (81-76, Feb. 17, 2007), Hawai’i (79-62, Feb. 23, 2008), and San Jose State (53-52, Feb. 21, 2009).
Youngstown State comes into Saturday’s game with an overall record of 8-18, including 2-14 in the Horizon League. They have lost six straight and 10 of their last 11 after starting the season with a 7-8 mark. DeAndre Mays leads four Penguins in double figure scoring as he averages 14.6 points per game.
A win over Youngstown State would be the Highlanders 11th of the season and would tie them with the 2003-04 squad for the second most wins in the Division I history of the program.
