Riverside, CA - Alyssa Morris' 16 points and Amber Cox's 13 propelled the UC Riverside women's basketball team to a 50-41 victory over visiting Pacific in Big West Conference action at the Student Recreation Center on Thursday evening. The Highlanders improve to 13-14 overall and 10-4 in conference play while the Tigers fall to 4-12, 2-11.
Morris and Cox combined for 29 of UCR's 50 points on the night as the Highlanders limited Pacific to 26.0 percent shooting and just 13 made field goals -- the lowest of any opponent all season. UCR's 50 points is also their lowest point total in a win all year.
The Highlanders came out of the gate strong in the first half and led 12-0 before the Tigers even got on board. Once they did, however, Pacific proceeded to score six straight points to close the gap, 12-6, at the 14:07 mark.
UCR then countered with five points to push the lead back to double digits as they would go into the break with a 28-13 advantage.
The Highlanders shot 40.7 percent from the field in the first period while the Tigers were held to just 3-of-21 (14.3 percent).
In the second half, UCR's lead stayed around the 10-point mark until a 6-0 Tiger rally late in the game closed the margin to five, 44-39, with 2:47 remaining. The Highlanders were able to score six points down the stretch compared to two for Pacific as they held on for the 50-41 win.
Morris led all scorers with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting including 1-of-2 from three point range and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe.
Cox added 13 points, Brittany Waddell had nine, and Marissa Rivera added eight. Rheya Neabors (pictured) tallied game-highs in assists (five) and rebounds (eight), as UCR out rebounded the Tigers 41-34 and had an 11-5 advantage in assists.
UCR also blocked a season-high 11 shots, the most since the team had 12 against Yale on Dec. 30, 2008.
With a win by UC Davis and a loss by Cal Poly in other Big West action, the Highlanders move into a tie with the Mustangs for second place while the Aggies take over first place by a half a game.
