Softball Wins 7-6 Eight-Inning Thriller At UT San Antonio

Box Score - UC Riverside 7, UT San Antonio 6 (8)
San Antonio, TX - The UC Riverside softball team rebounded from a 9-1 loss to North Texas in game one of the UTSA Tournament earlier in the day to defeat the host UT San Antonio 7-6 in eight innings in the second game on Friday evening at Roadrunner Field.
Neither team plated a run through four innings, and it wasn't until the fifth that the bats started going for both sides.
The Highlanders (3-7) started things off with three runs in the top of the fifth. Brooke Hebenton (pictured) led off with a walk and was later sacrificed to second by Samantha Noddin. Kayla White then reached base off a Roadrunner error, allowing Hebenton to score for the first run.
White then stole second, but was called out on a fielder's choice that allowed Ariel Shore to reach first base. Kameryn Hebenton walked for the next at-bat, and both Hebenton and Shore advanced a base on a wild pitch from the UTSA pitcher.
One batter later, Taylor Thomas' two-RBI single down the right field line scored both runners to increase UCR's lead to 3-0.
The Roadrunners rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added another in the next inning to tie the game at 3-3. Neither team scored in the seventh inning, so the game went into extra frames tied at three.
The Highlanders pounded out four runs on four hits in the top of the eighth, but could have had more runs as they left three runners stranded on base.
To make things interesting, UTSA responded with three runs in their respective half inning, but the Highlanders were able to hold on for the 7-6 win.
Marissa Alvidrez (3-3) pitched all eight innings for the Highlanders, allowing six runs on eight hits.
Thomas and B. Hebenton led UCR with two RBI while Alexis Villamor had two hits and the Hebenton sisters added two runs.
UC Riverside continues play at the UTSA Tournament with a 9:00 am game against UTSA and a 1:00 pm game against North Texas on Saturday, Feb. 27.
