Box Score - UC Riverside 4, CSU Bakersfield 2
Box Score - UC Riverside 10, CSU Bakersfield 2 (6 innings)
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team (12-14) returned to play on Monday afternoon by sweeping visiting CSU Bakersfield 4-2 and 10-2 (in six innings) at Amy S. Harrison Field.
The Roadrunners (10-15) led off the first game with a single in the top of the first to take an early 1-0. The Highlanders countered with a lone run in the second as a Brittany Keeney (pictured) solo home run notched the game at one apiece.
Bakersfield plated another run in the third inning off starting pitcher Marissa Alvidrez, but that was all the scoring they would do as the senior from Bakersfield held them scoreless the rest of the way.
UCR got that one run back in its respective third inning as Taylor Thomas' single down the left field line scored Ariel Shore from second base.
The Highlanders added insurance runs by scoring one each in the fifth and sixth innings as they went on for the 4-2 win.
Alvidrez picked up her eighth win on the season by allowing just two runs on five hits in 7.0 innings of work. Sammy Rodriguez was saddled with the loss for the Runners, giving up four runs on seven hits.
In the second game, the Highlanders bats were hot in the first inning as they scored four runs on five hits to take an early 4-0 advantage. Shore started things off with a double and later advanced to third after a Kameryn Hebenton single. A Taylor Thomas 2-RBI single then plated both base runners, giving UCR a 2-0 lead.
One batter later, Tiana Towns hit a double to score Thomas, lifting the Highlanders to a 3-0 advantage. With two outs and Keeney on second, Coco Villamor's RBI single made it 4-0 UCR. UC Riverside could have added more runs, however, as the last batter lined out with the bases loaded.
CSU Bakersfield got one run back in each of the second and third innings to trim the lead to 4-2, but the Highlanders again scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to open up the game at 8-2.
With one out in the sixth inning, Towns doubled down the left field line and was later brought home by Keeney's second home run of the game. Due to the eight-run run, the game ended in the sixth inning as UCR won by a 10-2 margin.
Pitcher Amy Lwin picked up her first win on the year, pitching six innings and allowing just two runs. Shauna Truan got the loss for the Roadrunners, allowing eight runs in 3.0 innings of work.
For the day, Keeney led UC Riverside with four runs, three RBI, three hits, and two home runs. Thomas also had three RBI while two other players added three hits apiece.
The Highlanders host a doubleheader with Utah on Tuesday, Mar. 23 at noon at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
