Saint Mary's 6, UC Riverside 4 Box Score
Moraga, CA—Michael Hur had three hits and blasted his team-leading fifth homer run of the season Friday afternoon, but it wasn't enough to help the Highlanders (9-8) avoid their third straight loss as they fell to Saint Mary's, 6-4.
Mark Anderson (1-2) picked up the win for the Gaels (7-9-1) as he allowed just seven hits and no walks in the complete-game victory. He was pitching a perfect game through four innings before Hur opened the top of the fifth with a single to center field. The Saint Mary's offense had already staked Anderson to a 2-0 lead at that point as Patrick Wisdom connected on a two-run shot to center in the bottom of the fourth off of UCR starter Matt Andriese (2-2). Justin Shults followed Hur's single with a base knock to center, but the Highlanders were unable to bring either home.
UC Riverside got on the board one inning later, however, as Trevor Hairgrove opened the sixth with a single and after advancing to second on a ground out, came around to score on a Joey Gonzales base hit to center. One out later, Hur singled to left to score Gonzales, and Shults's double brought Hur home to give UCR a 3-2 lead.
Unfortunately, that lead was short-lived. Saint Mary's put runners at second and third with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Andriese got Chris Murphy to ground to second which should have ended the inning. Bryan Horst's throw to first was off the mark, though, and both base runners scored to put the Gaels back on top, 4-3.
Anderson recovered from his rough sixth inning retiring the next six Highlanders in order. The Gaels went three-up, and three-down in the bottom of the seventh, but Andriese ran into trouble again in the Saint Mary's half of the eighth. Wisdom was in the middle of it again as he began the inning with a single to center. Brenden Kalfus followed with a bunt single, and Wisdom stole third to put runners at the corners. One out later Shawn O'Brien singled to right bringing home Wisdom and Kalfus giving the Gaels a three-run lead.
Hur led off the UCR ninth with a homer to right center to make it a 6-4 ballgame, but Anderson got the next three Highlanders in order to close out the game.
UC Riverside and Saint Mary's square off again in a Saturday double header at Louis Guisto Field with the first game slated to start at 11 am PT.
