
Hornets and Bears Sting Highlanders On Day Two At Aggie Stampede

Davis, CA - The UC Riverside softball team (14-17) continued play at the Aggie Stampede on Saturday morning with an 8-4 loss to Sacramento State and a 3-0 shutout against No. 13 ranked Cal. The tournament concludes on Sunday with games against Saint Mary's (10:00 am) and Sac State (12:30 pm).
The Highlanders took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one as an error by the Hornets third baseman allowed Taylor Thomas and Ariel Shore to score from second and third base respectively.
Sac State then tied the game in the third with two runs of its own, and proceeded to take the lead with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 7-2 advantage.
UCR was able to get two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning as two additional Hornet errors allowed those runs, getting the Highlanders to within three at 7-4.
However, an insurance run by Sac State in the seventh sealed the win as UCR went three up, three down in the bottom of its respective frame to end the game.
Amy Lwin picked up the loss for the Highlanders, allowing five runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work.
Looking to get back to their winning ways, UCR faced off against No. 13 Cal in the second game of the day, but the Bears proved their national ranking with a 3-0 win.
California scored two runs in the first inning and added one run in the fifth as UCR tallied just two hits during the game.
Marissa Alvidrez got the loss for the Highlanders allowing three runs, two earned, in six innings of work.
For the day, Thomas led UCR with two hits and two runs.
