Box Score - Saint Mary's 5, UC Riverside 1
Box Score - UC Riverside 6, Sacramento State 2
Davis, CA - The UC Riverside softball team split of a pair of games on Sunday afternoon to conclude the UC Davis Aggie Stampede. The Highlanders (15-18) lost to Saint Mary's 5-1 but rebounded for a 6-2 victory over Sacramento State.
The Highlanders' win against Sac State snapped their four-game losing skid after previously winning a Division I-record five games.
UCR fell behind 2-0 after single runs in both the third and fourth innings gave the Hornets the early lead. The Highlanders finally got on board in the fifth as they exploded for four runs on two hits and two errors.
The bases were loaded for the Highlanders after a single, an error, and two fielder's choices gave UCR three base runners. Kameryn Hebenton then hit a two-RBI single up the middle to tie the game, and after another Hornet error and an illegal pitch, the Highlanders staked a claim on a 4-2 advantage.
UCR added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh as RBI singles by Marissa Alvidrez and Coco Villamor (pictured) sealed the win.
Alvidrez earned her tenth win this season on the mound, moving into a tie for second place in UCR's DI history for most single-season wins. She allowed just two hits while striking out three in 7.0 innings of work.
In the first game of the day, the Highlanders got things going offensively in the first inning as a Taylor Thomas single plated Ariel Shore from third base for an early 1-0 lead. The score stayed intact until Saint Mary's tied the game at one apiece with a single run in the third.
The Gaels then took its first lead of the game an inning later as they plated three runs for a 4-1 advantage. UCR had an opportunity to get runs back in the fifth with the bases loaded, but they could not take advantage of the runners in scoring position as a pop up ended the inning.
The Gaels added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning that all but sealed the win as the Highlanders had just one base runner in the last two innings of play.
Lauren Molina (3-4) was saddled with the loss for UCR, giving up four runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work.
For the day, Dawn Brodersen and Villamor led the team with three hits apiece while Hebenton led with two RBI.
The Highlanders begin Big West play at defending conference-champs Cal Poly on Friday, Apr. 2 for a three-game set in San Luis Obispo.
