Box Score - UC Riverside 10, Cal Poly 0
Box Score - Cal Poly 3, UC Riverside 2
San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside softball team (16-19, 1-1) opened up Big West play on Friday afternoon with a 10-0 thrashing of 2009 defending conference champions, Cal Poly, at Bob Janssen Field in the first game of the doubleheader. The Mustangs (12-16, 1-1) rallied for a 3-2 win in game two of the series, however, giving both teams a split to open conference play.
The 1-1 start in conference play for UCR ties its best record to open league play since the program transitioned to Division I for the 2002 season.
In the first game, senior Marissa Alvidrez pitched a complete, two-hit game to earn her 11th victory on the season. She also went 3-of-5 with an RBI and one run to lead UCR offensively.
The 10-0 shutout over the Mustangs is the largest shutout recorded in the Highlanders Division I conference history. The 16 hits pounded out by UCR also ties the record for the most hits in a single game in the club's DI history.
The Highlanders took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning as a Coco Villamor RBI single up the middle plated Alexis Pickett from second base.
UC Riverside then batted around the order in the third inning, scoring six runs on seven hits and one error to take a 7-0 advantage.
Taylor Thomas led off the inning with a double to center field and was brought home by an Alvidrez RBI single in the next at-bat. Dawn Brodersen then pinch ran for the Highlanders starting pitcher, and she later advanced to second on a Brittany Keeney single.
Pickett then laced a double into play, scoring Brodersen from second, and after a pitching change, Brooke Hebenton hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Keeney from third. A single by Villamor then put runners at the corners, and a Tiana Towns pinch-hit RBI single scored Pickett from third, bringing UCR's advantage to 5-0.
Kameryn Hebenton then singled up the middle to score another run, and with the bases loaded, Thomas was walked by the Mustangs pitcher for the sixth run of the inning.
With the bases still loaded, however, the Highlanders couldn't take advantage of the opportunity as a fly out and a pop up ended the inning with UCR leading 7-0.
The six runs scored by the Highlanders in the third inning is the most they have scored in one inning in the 2010 season and the most since they scored 10 runs in the seventh inning at UC Santa Barbara on Mar. 29, 2009.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, UCR put together another rally as they scored three runs on three hits and two errors.
Thomas got the rally going with a single down the right field line to score the speedy Ariel Shore from first base. After Alvidrez reached on an error by the Cal Poly third baseman, Keeney lined a triple to right center field, scoring both runners for the 10-0 margin.
After scoring 10 runs on 16 hits in the first game of the doubleheader, the Highlanders bats went a bit quiet in the second game as they scored two runs on three hits.
Cal Poly took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but UCR countered with two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 advantage.
Shore led off the inning with a walk and was later brought home on a Kameryn Hebenton triple to right center field. After two straight pop ups, Keeney singled to left field, scoring Hebenton from third for the 2-1 margin.
The Highlanders lead was short-lived, however, as the Mustangs matched UCR with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to retake the lead at 3-2. UC Riverside would only get two more runners on base in the last three innings as they fell to the Mustangs.
Amy Lwin was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in 3.0 inning of work.
For the day, Keeney led the Highlanders with four hits and three RBI. Kameryn Hebenton tallied three hits and two RBI, while Alvidrez had three hits and Thomas added two RBI.
UC Riverside concludes its three-game series at Cal Poly with a single game on Saturday, Apr. 3 at noon in San Luis Obispo.
