4/3/2010 1:23:39 PM | Softball
Box Score - UC Riverside 5, Cal Poly 0
San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside softball team (17-19, 2-1) took its conference-opening series from Cal Poly with a 5-0 win on Saturday after previously splitting a doubleheader on Friday at Bob Janssen Field.
The Highlanders 2-1 start in league play is their best conference start in the Division I history of the program.
Senior Marissa Alvidrez pitched her second consecutive shutout and has a 0.0 ERA in Big West play. Her 12 wins on the season is just one shy of the UCR DI record for single-season wins.
The Highlanders opened up an early 3-0 lead on a two-out rally in the first inning. After two straight ground outs, Taylor Thomas slugged a double to right center and later scored on an Alvidrez single.
Brittany Keeney was then walked to advance Alvidrez 60 feet, and an Alexis Pickett single up the middle loaded the bases. Brooke Hebenton came up big for the Highlanders as she lined a single up the middle, scoring both Alvidrez and Keeney for the 3-0 lead.
UCR added a single run in the fourth inning as Ariel Shore scored from third base on a Thomas single through the left side. The Highlanders put another insurance run on the board in the fifth as Hebenton scored on an RBI single from Shore.
Cal Poly (12-17, 1-2) had an opportunity to get some runs back in the bottom of the seventh inning, as they opened with two straight singles. Alvidrez was then able to get a force out, a strike out, and a ground out to end the threat and the game, giving UCR the win.
Alvidrez and Shore each had three hits apiece for the Highlanders while Hebenton added two RBI.
UC Riverside returns to action for a three-game conference series at Cal State Fullerton beginning on Saturday, Apr. 10 at 12:00 pm.
