Fullerton, CA - Embarking on its second weekend of Big West Conference play during the 2010 season, the UC Riverside softball team (18-20, 3-2) split a doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday afternoon with a 5-4 win in game one and a 2-1 loss in game two at Anderson Field.
UCR's 3-2 record in conference play is its best-ever start in Division I history, while the team has already reached the number of wins it had last season with 16 games remaining on its regular season docket.
The Highlanders took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game one off of a Taylor Thomas RBI double that scored Kameryn Hebenton (pictured) from second base.
The Titans (8-28, 3-1) then scored three runs on one hit and two errors in their respective half inning to open up a 3-1 margin. Pitcher Marissa Alvidrez was able to settle down after that, however, as she held CSF's bats at bay for the next five innings, allowing no runs to score.
UC Riverside got the runs back in the second and third innings as they scored two runs apiece in each frame. With a runner on second base, Hebenton hit her first-career home run to left field that knotted the game at three all.
With runners at second and third in the third inning, Alexis Pickett singled through the right side to plate one run, and at the next at-bat, Brooke Hebenton bunted to the pitcher, allowing Brittany Keeney to come home from third base for the 5-3 advantage.
The two runs scored in the third inning would prove critical to the Highlanders success as the Titans scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning and had the go ahead run at the plate.
After a fielding error allowed the first runner to get on base, Alvidrez got the next two batters to fly out and ground out respectively. A double for Torrie Anderson brought one run home to close the margin to 5-4, but Alvidrez got the next batter to strike out, effectively ending the inning and the game.
Alvidrez pitched a complete game for UCR, giving up four runs, two of them earned, while striking out four. With this win, she ties Highlanders single-season record for most wins in the Division I era with 13.
Ari Cervante was saddled with the loss for Cal State Fullerton, giving up five runs on 10 hits in 7.0 innings of work.
Looking to continue their winning ways, the Highlanders bats went a little quiet in game two, getting just one run on four hits.
Cal State Fullerton took an early 2-0 lead after plating one run apiece in both the first and second innings off UCR pitcher Amy Lwin.
The solo run for the Highlanders came in the fifth inning off a Pickett double that scored Keeney from second base, closing the gap to just one run. UC Riverside had the tying run at third base and the go ahead run at first, but a strike out ended the Highlanders scoring opportunities.
UCR again had the chance to tie or take the lead in sixth inning, but they left runners at first and third stranded, and went three up, three down in the seven inning to conclude the game.
After giving up two runs early, Lwin got into a grove and allowed just three baserunners after the second inning in the loss to the Titans. Krystal Heinle earned the win for CSF, pitching all seven innings and allowing just one run.
For the day, Pickett had four hits and two RBI for the Highlanders while Thomas added three hits and three other players each tallied two hits apiece.
The rubber match between these clubs is scheduled for Sunday, Apr. 11 at noon in Fullerton.
