UCLA 10, UC Riverside 0 Box Score
Riverside—The No. 1 ranked UCLA Bruins used six pitchers on the evening to hold UC Riverside to just two hits in a 10-0 win Tuesday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex. Eddie Young and Brian Horst each singled for the Highlanders as they fell to 15-12 on the season.
UC Riverside's defense struggled in the early going as the second batter of the game, Jeff Gelalich, hit a grounder to second which ate up Horst allowing Gelalich to reach safely.
Highlanders starter Eddie Orozco (0-2) tried to pick off Gelalich, but his throw to first was off the mark and made its way all the way to the visiting bullpen. While McConkey tracked down the errant throw, Gelalich advanced to third. Tyler Rahmatulla lifted a fly ball to center, and the Bruins had their first run of the game.
Brett Krill started the second for UCLA with a grounder to second, and Horst picked up his second error of the game allowing Krill to reach. Krill advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Cody Regis followed with a walk putting runners at first and second with nobody out.
Orozco helped himself out on the following play, however, as he spun towards second where shortstop Trevor Hairgrove had crept behind the bag, and Krill was picked of for the first out of the inning.
Unfortunately that didn't stop UCLA's momentum as Trevor Brown laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Regis to second, and Adrian Williams followed with a single through the left side to make it 2-0 Bruins.
Orozco retired UCLA in order in the top of the third, but in the fourth Regis singled with one out, and Brown singled through the right side moving Regis to third. The next batter, Williams laid down a bunt which Orozco was able to field with his glove and scoop towards catcher Robert Brantly in time to nail Regis at the plate for the second out of the inning.
With runners on first and second, Orozco hit Amaral with a pitch to load the bases, but Gelalich cleared them with a three-run triple to center giving the Bruins a 5-0 lead.
In the meantime, the Highlanders were hitless against UCLA starter Garrett Claypool through four innings of play
Trevor Frank came on in relief of Orozco to start the fifth inning for UC Riverside and retired the Bruins in order. However in the top of the sixth, UCLA strung together three singles, two walks and a sac fly to plate two more runs and make it 7-0 Bruins.
Eddie Young finally picked up the first hit for the Highlanders in the bottom of the fifth off of Matt Drummond who relieved Claypool the inning prior.
UCLA scored three more runs in the top of the eighth on an RBI double to right by Dean Espy, a bases loaded infield single by Krill and a fielders choice grounder by Justin Uribe.
Horst picked up the second hit of the evening for the Highlanders in the bottom of the eighth with a single through the left side with two outs, but he was erased on a fielders choice the following play to end the inning.
UC Riverside went in order in the bottom of the ninth, and the Bruins secured their 26th win of the season against just three losses.
The Highlanders begin a stretch of eight home games in 10 days this Friday with a three-game series against Long Beach State. First pitch Friday at the Riverside Sports Complez is scheduled for 6 pm PT.
