Long Beach State 8, UC Riverside 5 - Box Score
Riverside—Long Beach State pounded out 16 hits including eight doubles and a home run as the Dirtbags evened their three-game series with the Highlanders with an 8-5 win at the Riverside Sports Complex Saturday evening. The loss drops UC Riverside to 16-13, 4-4 in the Big West Conference while The Beach improves to 15-16, 4-4.
Dirtbags starter Jake Thompson needed just 49 pitches to cruise through the first five innings allowing just one run on three hits. The lone Highlanders run during that stretch came in the bottom of the third as Trevor Hairgrove laced a triple to right center and Brian McConkey brought him home with a ground out.
That made it 3-1 Long Beach State as the Dirtbags scored a single run in the top of the second and two unearned runs in the top of the third. The score remained 3-1 until the top of the sixth when Brennan Metzger and Kirk Singer connected on back-to-back two-out doubles to give The Beach a three-run cushion.
The Highlanders got two back in the bottom half of the inning as they finally started to get their timing down against Thompson. McConkey, Joey Gonzales and Michael Hur each reached on singles to open the UCR half of the sixth to make it 4-2 Dirtbags. Robert Brantly grounded into a double play scoring Gonzales to reduce the Long Beach lead to one.
Emmons worked a scoreless seventh, and was lifted after Jonathan Jones laced a double down the left field line to open the eighth. Trevor Frank came on in relief and was met by a Jordan Casas double which scored Jones. Metzger doubled down the left field line scoring Casas, and Singer drilled a homer to left for an 8-3 Dirtbags advantage.
The Highlanders made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth as the first three batters of the inning reached base, capped off by Eddie Young's double to right which scored pinch runner Phil Hollinsworth and Shults. One batter later, Hairgrove singled to short putting runners at the corners and chasing Thompson from the game.
Jason Markovitz took over on the hill and struck out McConkey and pinch hitter Trent Jemmet to preserve the win.
The Highlanders and Dirtbags complete their three-game series on Sunday, April 18. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm PT as UCR's Matt Larkins (3-2, 4.50) takes on Long Beach State's Branden Pinder (3-3, 3.00)
