Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team stayed atop the Big West Conference standings on Saturday afternoon after its sweep of UC Santa Barbara at Amy S. Harrison Field with scores of 7-2 and 4-1.
The Highlanders improve their record to 21-20 overall and 6-2 in conference play. Their 6-2 mark in conference play is their best-ever league start in the program's Division I history, and is one win away from tying the mark for most wins in the Big West (seven, set in 2009).
UCR is also just one win shy of tying the Division I record for most wins in a season (22, set during the 2006 season).
The Highlanders doubleheader sweep over the Gauchos (9-30, 0-8) represents their first-ever back-to-back victories over UCSB in the Division I era.
UC Riverside opened up game one with an early 3-0 lead after plating two runs in the first inning and one in the third.
Kameryn Hebenton started things off by getting hit by a pitch and advancing to second on an Ariel Shore sacrifice bunt. Taylor Thomas was then walked to put runners at first and second for Marissa Alvidrez, who hit a RBI double to left field for the first run of the game. Brittany Keeney followed that up with a RBI single to center field for the 2-0 UCR lead.
The Highlanders made it a 3-0 advantage in the third inning off an Alexis Picket RBI single that plated Alvidrez from third base.
The scored stayed intact until the fifth inning when UC Santa Barbara finally got on board with a single run. With two outs, Brooke Putich singled and advanced to second on an error by the Highlanders left fielder. Jessica Beristianos then doubled down the right field line to cut the margin to 3-1.
The Highlanders got that run back in their respective fifth inning as a Brooke Hebenton sac fly scored Keeney from third to push the lead to 4-1.
The Gauchos again countered with a single run in the sixth, but UCR scored three insurance runs in its sixth inning to seal the 7-2 win. With the bases loaded and one out, a wild pitch by UCSB's pitcher brought one run home, an Alvidrez RBI single plated another, and a Gauchos error made it 7-2 in favor of the Highlanders.
In addition to going 2-for-2 in the batter's box, Alvidrez also pitched a complete game for UCR, allowing just two runs, one earned, while picking up her 15th win on the season. Lindsey Correa was saddled with the loss for UCSB, going 2.1 innings and giving up three runs.
Looking to continue their winning ways in game two of the doubleheader, the Highlanders fell behind 1-0 after a single run by the Gauchos in the fourth inning.
The Highlanders then used a huge two-out rally in the fifth inning and scored four runs on three hits to take a 4-1 advantage.
With runners at first and second with two outs, pinch hitter Jojo Mendoza was walked to load the bases. Taylor Thomas then laced a single into center field, scoring two runs and giving UCR a 2-1 lead. Alvidrez added a two-RBI double of her own at the next at-bat, increasing the Highlanders margin to 4-1.
UC Santa Barbara made things interesting in the seventh inning with two singles that put runners at first and second with one out. Alvidrez came in to pitch for starter Amy Lwin, and she proceeded to get the next two batters out to end the game.
Lwin picked up her second win on the season, going 6.1 innings and allowing just one run. Krista Cobb got the loss for the Gauchos, giving up four runs in 6.0 innings of work.
For the day, Alvidrez led the Highlanders with three hits and four RBI, while four other players added two hits apiece.
UC Riverside concludes its three-game series with UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Apr. 18 for a single game starting at noon at Amy S. Harrison Field.
