Baseball Makes It Two In A Row Against RoadRunners With 5-2 Victory

Box Score - UC Riverside 5, CSU Bakersfield 2
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Highlanders improved to 19-13 with a 5-2 win over the visiting Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners at the Riverside Sports Complex Saturday.
UCR starter Dustin Emmons improved to 5-3 with a solid outing. He scattered eight hits and allowed two runs, one earned, while striking out six in seven innings of work.
Derek Speigner pitched a perfect eighth and Mitch Patito closed things out, striking out two in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Bakersfield starter Matt Reyes took the loss, falling to 3-2. He went four innings, surrendering seven hits and four runs, three earned. Reliever Juan Padilla surrendered two hits and struck out two in four innings of work.
The Highlanders scored twice in the first. Brian McConkey and Joey Gonzales led off with back-to-back singles. An RBI groundout by Robert Brantly gave UCR a 1-0 lead. Justin Shults followed with a grounder to first, but instead of getting the sure out at first, Roadrunner first baseman Derek Geisinger threw home. The throw beat Gonzales, but the ball was knocked away from catcher Jeremy Rodriguez for an error and a 2-0 UCR lead.
UCR struck again in the second as Eddie Young led off with a single, then came home on a two-out triple by McConkey, a ball that centerfielder Joey Mills broke in on, only to see it fly over his head and roll to the wall.
Shults gave UCR a 4-0 lead in the third when he golfed a ball off of the base of the scoreboard in right center field for his sixth homer of the year.
The Roadrunners (17-19) got on the board in the sixth as Kudlock and Younger started the inning with back-to-back singles. Richardson followed with a potential double-play grounder to short, but Trevor Hairgrove was partially screened by the an umpire and booted it for an error, allowing Kudlock to come around with the Roadrunners’ first run. Henry followed with a fielder’s choice grounder to score Younger to make it 4-2.
UCR came back with a single run in the bottom of the seventh. Brantley doubled to center and pinch runner Phil Hollinsworth went to third on a nice sacrifice by Justin Shults. Tony Nix then sent a ball to the warning track for a sacrifice fly to plate Hollinsworth and give UCR a 5-2 lead.
The game was played in a very quick 2:09.
The two teams meet for the final game of the series on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
