Box Score - Pacific 6, UC Riverside 4
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team dropped its Big West Conference series to Pacific with a 6-4 loss on Sunday at Amy S. Harrison Field after splitting a doubleheader the day before.
The Highlanders fall to 22-23 and 7-5 with their first league series loss of the season, while the defeat is also their third in the last four games.
UCR had plenty of opportunities to score in each of its innings, but they left 13 batters on base—at least one in every inning—as they plated four on the day.
The Tigers (19-25, 5-6) opened with a solo run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead off a Highlanders error, but UCR countered with the equalizer in its respective frame, also on an error.
After a scoreless inning, Pacific blasted five runs on two hits and two errors in the third to take a 6-1 advantage. Luckily for starter Marissa Alvidrez, only one of the runs was earned as the Highlanders defense committed the errors that allowed the runs to score.
The Highlanders got one run back in the bottom of the third inning as an Alvidrez double scored Taylor Thomas from first after she was hit by a pitch.
UC Riverside continued chipping at the Tigers lead, scoring two runs with two outs in the sixth inning off two hits and one error. Thomas' RBI double scored Kameryn Hebenton from first for the first run, and an Alvidrez RBI single plated Thomas as UCR cut the margin to 6-4.
After getting through the top of the seventh unscathed, the Highlanders had an opportunity to tie and/or win the game in their respective seventh. UCR had the bases loaded with two outs, but a strike out ended the threat and gave Pacific the 6-4 victory.
Shaina Brock earned the win for the Tigers, pitching six innings and allowing four runs, three of them earned. Nikki Armagost came in in relief in the seventh and got her second save of the year.
Alvidrez was saddled with the loss for the Highlanders, giving up six runs, although only one earned, in 4.0 innings of work. In the batter's box, however, Alvidrez went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the team. Keeney added two hits while Thomas scored two runs for the blue and gold.
UC Riverside hits the road for conference series at UC Davis on Saturday-Sunday, May 1-2 in Davis, CA.
