Davis, CA - The UC Riverside softball team lost both games of a doubleheader at UC Davis on Saturday afternoon by scores of 5-4 and 4-1. The Highlanders have now lost five of their last six games, dropping to 22-25 overall and 7-7 in league play.
In game one of the three-game series, the Aggies (21-25, 10-4) scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead. The Highlanders bats were held at bay as they headed into the top of the seventh down by that same score, until they used a furious rally to tie things up.
With runners at the corners and one out, Coco Villamor (pictured) doubled to left field, bringing home one run. Tiana Towns then reached on a fielding error by UCD's first baseball, which allowed two runs to score to cut the margin down to 4-3.
A single by Kameryn Hebenton again put runners at the corners, and an Ariel Shore RBI bunt at the next at-bat plated the runner from third, tying the game at four apiece.
After a ground out that advanced UCR's baserunners to second and third, the Highlanders could not keep the rally going as a second straight ground out ended the inning.
It looked as if the teams were headed into extra frames after the Highlanders tied the score, but the Aggies had other plans as they proceeded to plate the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
With runners at second and third with one out for UCD, Alex Holmes singled up the middle to bring around the winning run, giving the Aggies the 5-4 victory.
In addition to hitting the game-winning run, Holmes also earned the win for UC Davis, pitching 0.2 innings in the seventh.
Alvidrez (15-11) took the loss for UC Riverside, giving up five runs and nine hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Looking to rebound in game two of the doubleheader, the Highlanders got on board in the first inning as Kameryn Hebenton led off with a solo home run to left field.
UCR's lead was short-lived, however, as the Aggies countered with a single run in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams then went scoreless through the next four innings until UCD scored three runs in the sixth to push its lead out to 4-1. UC Riverside was retired in order in top of the seventh as the Aggies claimed the doubleheader sweep.
For the day, Villamor led the club with four hits while Kameryn Hebenton added three and Brittany Keeney and Taylor Thomas had two apiece.
The teams conclude the series with a single game on Sunday, May 2 at noon in Davis, CA.
