Box Score - UC Davis 10, UC Riverside 2
Davis, CA - The UC Riverside softball team got swept in league play for the first time all season on Sunday afternoon after its 10-2 loss at UC Davis at La Rue Field. The Highlanders (22-26, 8-8), who dropped a doubleheader with the Aggies (22-25, 11-4) on Saturday, have now lost the last four straight and six of the previous seven.
The Highlanders used three pitchers on the day to try and stifle the Aggies offense. Marissa Alvidrez got the starting nod but lasted just 1.1 innings while giving up five runs, four of them earned. Amy Lwin came on in relief in the second, but gave up three runs in an inning of work.
Casey Suda relieved Lwin with one out in the third, and was able to get out of the inning without further damage. UC Davis led 8-1 at that point.
Things looking promising for the Highlanders to start the game, as they used a two-out rally to get one run across in the top of the first inning. After the first two batters got out, Taylor Thomas doubled to right center and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Alvidrez brought her home with an RBI double of her own to give the Highlanders a 1-0 advantage.
For the second time in as many games, however, UCR could not keep its lead past a half inning as the Aggies scored two runs in their respective first inning to take a 2-1 lead. UC Davis added four more runs an inning later, and two more in the third, to open an 8-1 margin.
The Highlanders were able to get one run back in the top of the fourth as a Coco Villamor RBI single up the middle plated Brittany Keeney from third base, cutting the lead to 8-2.
The Aggies scored a solo run in each each of the fifth and sixth innings to push their lead out to 10-2 as the Highlanders were held to just one hit through the rest of the game.
Alvidrez (15-12) took the loss for the Highlanders, her fifth straight in as many starts. Dana Waldusky (8-9) earned the win for UCD, giving up just two runs in seven innings of work.
UC Riverside returns home to host a Big West Conference series against Cal State Northridge on Saturday-Sunday, May 8-9 at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside, CA.
